FIRST VISIT
What we show you at your first consultation
You cannot see inside your own mouth. So when you hear "you need treatment," there is no way to check whether it is really necessary, and that is unsettling. At Joy Dental Clinic Bongcheon, we look at the images together before we talk about treatment. Below is the actual order of a first consultation, as it happens.
The first consultation follows this order
- 01
Panoramic X-ray
One image of your whole mouth.
Tooth roots, jawbone height, previously treated teeth and even hidden wisdom teeth appear on one screen. This step first turns what a mirror cannot show into an image.
What is a panoramic X-ray? (Korean) → - 02
Q-ray imaging
Blue light, not radiation, is used to photograph the tooth surface.
Areas with plaque buildup show up red, and areas that have started to lose minerals show up dark. You can confirm "decay is starting here" by color, not just by words.
How Q-ray works → - 03
The director examines your mouth, and we look at the images together
The images are put on a monitor and explained.
After examining your mouth directly, the director goes through the panoramic and Q-ray images tooth by tooth and explains the condition of each. Not only the painful spots, but also the areas that are fine for now and the areas that can simply be watched.
- 04
We explain the treatment needed and answer your questions
Treatment is recommended only on the basis of what the images show.
We explain which treatment appears necessary and why, what other options exist, and what does not need to be done right away. You do not have to decide on the spot. Ask as many questions as you like.
- 05
Cost information
After the director’s explanation, our treatment coordinator explains costs separately.
Based on the scope of treatment the director explained, we go over the cost, whether national health insurance applies, and the timeline. Fees for non-covered treatments are also published on this website.

A CT scan is taken only when needed
Not everyone has a CT scan. We take one when we need to measure bone thickness and the distance to the nerve where an implant would go, or when a single panoramic image is not enough to judge, such as an impacted wisdom tooth or inflammation at a root tip. When a CT is taken, we rotate the 3D image on screen and show you directly how much bone remains.
More about 3D CT →We recommend only what the images show
We do not recommend treatment we cannot show you the evidence for. Whether a tooth needs to be extracted or can be saved, and whether something needs treatment now or can be watched, is decided while looking at the images together. We tell you about the treatment that is needed, only as much as is needed.
How to check if you are worried about over- or under-treatment →You are welcome to bring a family member
Large treatments such as implants or dentures are hard for a parent to hear about and decide on alone. Adult children can come in, see the same images and hear the same explanation. If you write down your questions in advance, we will answer them one by one.
Implants: what is good to know before a consultation →After treatment is finished
The director who planned your treatment personally handles the final check and the follow-up checkups after it. If a problem is found during a checkup, we tell you first.
Frequently asked questions
Q1 In what order does the first consultation proceed?
We first take a panoramic X-ray, then Q-ray (quantitative light-induced fluorescence) images. Next, the director examines your mouth directly, puts the images on a monitor to explain your condition, tells you about the treatment needed and the alternatives, and then answers your questions. After the director’s explanation, our treatment coordinator explains costs separately.
Q2 Does everyone get a CT scan?
No. We take one when we need to see the bone thickness and nerve position where an implant would go, or when a panoramic image alone is not enough to judge, such as an impacted wisdom tooth or inflammation at a root tip. When a CT is taken, we explain it while looking at the CT images together.
Q3 Can an adult child join a parent’s consultation?
Yes. The larger the treatment, the better it is for a family member to see the images and hear the explanation together. When everyone has seen the same screen and heard the same words, the conversation stays consistent when you talk it over again at home.
Q4 Do I have to decide on treatment the same day?
No. You can go home, think it over after hearing the explanation, and decide later. In situations that should not be postponed, such as severe pain or a spreading infection, we show you the reason in the images and tell you.
Q5 I have images taken at another dental clinic. Can I bring them?
If you bring them, we will refer to them. However, if they were taken a long time ago or the resolution is low, we may take new images to check your current condition.
Q6 Who looks after me once treatment is finished?
The director who planned your treatment personally handles the final check and the regular checkups after it. If a problem is found during a checkup, we tell you first, even before you feel any discomfort.
※ The images taken and their order may vary depending on your condition. An accurate diagnosis is given after examination at the clinic.
