SYMPTOMS

What symptoms do you have?

Choose a symptom to see its common causes, the signs that should not be put off, the order in which we check, and the treatment it leads to. This does not replace a diagnosis.

When you should contact us right away

  • When your face or neck is swollen with a fever, or you cannot open your mouth well
  • When bleeding does not stop after an extraction or surgery even when biting on gauze
  • When a tooth has been loosened or knocked out by a blow — the chance of saving it falls as time passes
  • When throbbing pain continues even at rest and wakes you at night
  • When pus forms like a blister on the gum and keeps coming and going

The same symptom can have different causes

A single symptom such as "it hurts when I chew" can come from a cracked tooth, a restoration that is too high, inflammation at the root tip, or swollen gums. Each is treated differently, and while some can be watched for a few more days, others grow larger the longer they are put off. So the explanations on these pages do not replace a diagnosis. They are written so that you know what needs to be checked before you come in.

When you visit, we take images of the area with symptoms, put them on screen, and explain while looking together at what is happening in your mouth now. We do not recommend treatment we cannot show you the evidence for — what we show you at the first consultation is described in our first consultation guide.

If you want to see in advance which treatment a symptom leads to, see Treatments; if you want to know what a term you heard means, see our dental glossary (Korean).
